The Bookshelf Conversations #162: Ethan D. Bryan

Man, it’s been a long time since I’ve had a catch.

I stopped playing competitive softball almost five years ago. Then COVID (I actually bought a Pitchback for the yard and used it maybe a couple of times). Then the accident (the resulting arm injuries make it painful to throw).

So I was a bit jealous to learn of Ethan Bryan’s book A Year of Playing Catch: What a Simple Daily Experiment Taught Me About Life. What a fun idea. Every single day for a year? In all kinds of weather? Kudos. And while we’re at it, why is it called a game of catch? What is the object of an otherwise pleasant way to spend a few idle moments? It is a rite of passage for parents and their kids, one to treasure, and Bryan makes his experience feel like a treasure as he meets new friends and learns those life lessons.

If there’s one minor complaint — actually more of an observation — I think this book would have benefited from photos of the author and his “playmates.”
